Thai princess dies aged 47 after nearly four years in coma

Thailand is in mourning as Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has died at age 47. She passed away following a long illness, with her last four years being spent in a coma.

The royal palace confirmed that the beloved princess, often known affectionately as “Princess Bha,” died on Thursday evening in a Bangkok hospital. She had been in a coma for almost four years after collapsing in December 2022 due to a severe heart-related condition.

Her health deteriorated over time due to a series of serious complications, including infections, abdominal inflammation, irregular heartbeat, and issues affecting blood clotting.

Born in 1978, Princess Bajrakitiyabha was widely regarded as one of the most accomplished members of the Thai Royal Family. Educated in law, including studies in the United States, she built a respected career as a diplomat, lawyer, and advocate for women’s rights in prisons.

The princess also served in several high-profile international roles, including work with the United Nations. Sadly, her long illness had kept her out of the public eye for years, with limited updates from the royal household during her treatment.
