Trace Cyrus Says Dad Billy Ray Hasn’t ‘Been There’ for Sister Noah and Has ‘Pushed Us All Away’: ‘That’s Your Baby Girl’
|Trace Cyrus is opening up about family pain.
On Wednesday, Jan. 22, the musician wrote an open letter to his father, Billy Ray Cyrus, on Instagram, claiming that the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer has grown distant from his family in recent years. Trace’s concerned post comes days after Billy Ray, 63, performed during President Donald Trump’s inauguration festivities, which sparked concern online.
“Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away,” Trace, 35, wrote in part, seemingly referring to sisters Noah, 25, Miley, 32, and Brandi, 37. “Noah desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life and you haven’t even been there for her. That’s your baby girl. She deserves better. Somehow just like me she still idolizes you though.”
Elsewhere in the letter, Trace expressed fear that “the world may lose” him too soon and addressed his own sobriety, writing,”We haven’t talked in a while but I’m over a year and half clean from alcohol. Guess what? I feel amazing.”
“I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly but I think I have a pretty good idea & I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help. You know how to reach me. Till that day comes I will continue to pray for you,” Trace added.

Billy Ray adopted Trace and his sister Brandi when he married their mom Tish Cyrus, 57, in 1993. (The pair divorced in 2022 after several separations; Tish went on to marry actor Dominic Purcell in 2023.)
While Trace writes to Billy Ray that, “I wanted to be just like you” as a child, he added that, “Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now,” Trace said. “It seems this world has beaten you down and it’s become obvious to everyone but you. You may be upset with me for posting this but I really could care less at this point. We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns. You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it.”
Public scrutiny for Billy Ray began to mount after he delivered a bizarre performance at President Trump’s inaugural Liberty Ball on Jan. 20, which viewers online called “cringe-worthy” and “legitimately concerning.”
“In life, when you have technical difficulties, you just gotta keep going, or as President Trump would say, ‘You gotta fight,’ ” he quipped following the ill-fated appearance.
The day after the Liberty Ball, Billy Ray claimed once again that the performance was affected by technical difficulties, telling PEOPLE in an exclusive statement, “I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not. I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me. “I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night and I’ve learned through all these years when the producer says, ‘You’re on,’ you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell. I was there for the people and we had a blast. That’s called rock n roll!!!”
He doubled down on the backlash in a Jan. 23 Instagram post.
“This was the most fun part of the Liberty Ball! And if you didn’t see it… you just had to be there,” Billy Ray wrote. “I just don’t think you understand.”
