The Roker Family is Mourning

On June 11th, Al Roker, the beloved host of the Today show, took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news of his family’s loss – their cherished dog, Pepper, had passed away at the age of 12. Pepper had been a significant part of their lives, as Roker expressed in his touching post:

“Twelve years ago, this sweet little girl named Pepper changed our lives. Yesterday, we had to say goodbye. While our hearts are heavy, they are also fuller because of all the love she bestowed on everyone who got to meet her.”

Pepper’s passing has left a void in the Roker family, and Al did not disclose any specific details surrounding her death. The Today show article mentioned that the Rokers adopted Pepper in 2012 from a rescue facility in Pennsylvania. Al frequently posted about Pepper on his Instagram, and even Deborah Roberts, Al’s wife and an ABC News Reporter, shared a heartfelt remembrance on her own account, along with pictures of Pepper and their family.

“She arrived on my birthday. Wasn’t even supposed to be ours. The rescue coordinator had promised the perfect pup for us. A beautiful mop looking mutt who would be gentle with kids,” Deborah wrote, reminiscing about the day they welcomed Pepper into their lives.

For twelve remarkable years, Pepper continued to bring joy to the Roker household. Deborah fondly remembers a Christmas memory, where Pepper’s mischievous charm added laughter and love to their festivities:

“For 12 years, Pepper continued to do just that. A quiet sweetheart. Months later during the Christmas chaos of gift unwrapping, she pooped under the tree. We eeewwed and screamed and laughed. The unconditional love affair had begun.”

Pepper became Deborah’s faithful companion, her shadow, always by her side, faithful and content just to be near. Deborah marvels at how this little soul could give so much love without asking for anything in return, besides affectionate hugs. Pepper had a way of stealing the hearts of friends and family alike, even those who were not particularly fond of dogs. She was different, a warm and comforting presence for anyone lucky enough to know her.

“Today I woke up to a world without her. A quiet house. Her toys and beds… still. No wagging tail. Yet, her warmth still lingers. Our hearts are aching. But wow. What a beautiful gift of memories she gave. We miss you, dear Pep!”

In a more recent Instagram post in May, Al shared a photo of Pepper and mentioned her surgery for a health scare. The good news was that Pepper was on the mend, receiving excellent care, and would be returning home soon. Al lovingly declared that she could sleep on their bed as much as she wanted. Rest in peace, sweet Pepper. Your memory lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to experience your unconditional love and gentle spirit.
