If you’re one of the millions of people who have purchased a rotisserie chicken at Costco since they were first introduced at the retailer, you know why they’re far superior than at any other store.
Not only are the chickens larger, but they’ve remained the same low price since 2009!
But recently, one thing has changed, and it’s made a lot of customers upset.
Beginning in March, Costco began introducing new packaging for its famous rotisserie chicken. It was meant to be more environmentally friendly, but customers have complained it’s done more damage than good.
“Chicken juice spilled all over the trunk of our car,” one person said on Reddit.
“I understand being more environmentally conscious but honestly it was so bad it will make me question whether I really want to get any more of these things and deal with that experience all over again,” another weighed in.
Previously, Costco sold its chicken in hard-shelled plastic packaging, but in March the warehouse club began switching to flexible plastic bags, similar to bags used by other stores.
The change is anticipated to reduce plastic use by 75% and save over 17 million pounds of resin each year. The eco-friendly bags are also expected to reduce carbon emissions by 4,000 metric tons, which is equivalent to taking 1,000 delivery trucks off the road.
While Costcos in Canada made the switch one year ago, the rollout has been slower across the U.S. with some clubs still awaiting the changeover.
And from the looks of it, some people don’t mind the wait.
“As a deli worker, I hate the bags. It takes longer to put in the bag compared to the container and it’s messier.”
But for those who shop at a location that has made the switch, one person on Reddit had a suggestion.
“They have plastic bags all around the meat department so you can put your meat purchases in a bag and keep it from dripping, grab a couple for your chicken.”
