Baby Found with Umbilical Cord Still Attached Is in Critical Condition After Being Left Outside in Freezing Temperatures
|A newborn baby is reportedly in critical condition after being left outside in freezing temperatures in Texas.
The baby was found swaddled in a towel inside a basket and breathing weakly with the umbilical cord still attached around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, News 4 (WOAI) San Antonio reported on Jan 24.
The newborn was left directly across from a fire station with a 24-hour safe surrender site on the corner of Nolan and Cherry Street on the East Side of San Antonio, and once discovered, the baby was quickly taken to a hospital, where it remains in critical condition, the local outlet added.
According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in San Antonio reached as low as 25 degrees on the night the child was left outside. The city has been experiencing a bout of unusually cold weather, the NWS data suggested.
San Antonio is under Texas’ Baby Moses Law — also called the Safe Haven Law — which gives new parents in crisis a safe, legal option for their child. The law, implemented in 1999 and later inspiring similar laws in other states, allows a new parent who is unable to care for their child, for any reason, to leave their newborn in a “designated safe space with no questions asked.” These spaces include hospitals, EMS stations, free-standing emergency centers and fire stations.

Following a new parent’s surrender of their child, the baby will be placed under medical care and supervised by an emergency provider.
News 4 reported that while the San Antonio Police Department is investigating this week’s incident, officers have not made any arrests.
