For years, Marla Maples lived under the brightest possible spotlight. Her romance with Donald Trump became tabloid news, their 1993 wedding was one of New York’s biggest celebrity events, and the birth of their daughter, Tiffany, kept her connected to one of America’s most famous families.
When the marriage with Donald Trump ended, Marla Maples made a surprising choice. From small-town Georgia to New York City
Marla Maples was born October 27, 1963, in Cohutta, Georgia, where she has described her childhood as “storybook-perfect.” A talented athlete and popular student, she was crowned homecoming queen in high school and grew up surrounded by the kind of close-knit Southern environment she would later try to recreate for her own daughter.
She initially attended the University of Georgia, where she studied marketing, but left after roughly two and a half years. New York City soon became her new focus.
There, Maples pursued modeling, beauty pageants and entertainment opportunities as she tried to establish herself. She was young, ambitious and still finding her footing when she crossed paths with a businessman who was already one of the city’s biggest personalities: Donald Trump.
The romance that became a national scandal
Maples recalled meeting Trump for the first time in 1985. She said they immediately connected, although the timing wasn’t right.
For years, the two continued talking and occasionally crossing paths. By 1988, however, Maples knew her feelings had become serious.
“By ’88, I knew I truly loved this guy,” she recalled in a New York magazine interview.
The problem was that Trump was still married to Ivana Trump.
As Maples later described it, she believed there was already a plan for Donald and Ivana’s marriage to end, so she tried to keep her distance. But the relationship eventually became impossible to hide.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
Maples’ photograph and name appeared in the New York tabloids, turning what had previously been a private relationship into a national spectacle.
She later remembered an especially uncomfortable encounter with Ivana in Colorado.
“When we saw each other in Colorado, Ivana and I, it was just a moment of both of us wanting to know the truth,” Maples said.

Only weeks later, Maples was watching a boxing match on television when she saw news flash across the screen that Donald and Ivana were divorcing.

Tiffany was born in October 1993, and Donald and Marla married later that year in a lavish ceremony at New York City’s Plaza Hotel.
But behind the glamorous wedding was a remarkably strict prenuptial agreement.
According to reporting by Vanity Fair, Maples reportedly wanted a $25 million settlement. The agreement she ultimately signed provided $1 million if the marriage ended within five years, plus another $1 million toward purchasing a home.
There were also provisions concerning Tiffany’s support. Trump agreed to pay $100,000 a year in child support, but those payments could end if Tiffany obtained a full-time job, joined the military or entered the Peace Corps before turning 21.
The agreement also contained confidentiality provisions concerning their marriage.
For all the spectacle surrounding their wedding, the marriage itself lasted less than six years. Donald and Marla separated in 1997 and finalized their divorce in 1999.
And that’s when Maples’ life began taking a very different direction.

She relocated to California with Tiffany and began building a much quieter life.
In a 2016 interview, she pushed back against the assumption that she had married Trump for wealth.
“I wasn’t there for the glamorous life or the riches,” she said.
She even lived in a relatively modest 740-square-foot apartment at one point after the divorce.
Maples also denied rumors that Trump was paying her to remain silent.
“People say, ‘He pays her not to talk about him?’ — that’s not true,” she said.
For Maples, money and status simply weren’t what mattered most.
“To me, it’s never about how much money you have. It’s about how you’re connecting with each other, supporting each other,” she explained.
She wanted Tiffany to have a normal childhood
Perhaps the biggest change came in the way Maples raised her daughter.
Having grown up in rural Georgia, she wanted Tiffany to experience something similar — despite being the child of one of the most famous businessmen in America.
Their life in California was intentionally simple.

“I just said it’s important for her to form her own relationship with him, without my input. I wanted to create some consistency where she could see him,” she explained.
She would bring Tiffany to New York several times a year so she could spend time with Donald.
Tiffany eventually had her own lavish wedding
Years later, Maples watched her daughter enter a very different kind of spotlight.
Tiffany married businessman Michael Boulos on November 12, 2022, at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
The wedding was every bit as extravagant as one might expect from the Trump family. Tiffany wore an Elie Saab gown, while Maples appeared as the mother of the bride in a lavender Elie Saab dress.
Donald Trump walked Tiffany down the aisle and later shared an emotional father-daughter dance with her.
During his toast, he praised Boulos and offered him a simple piece of advice:
“Michael, you better take care of her.”
The wedding nearly faced a major disruption, however, when Hurricane Nicole struck Florida just days before the ceremony. Some planned events had to be canceled, and travel was disrupted as Palm Beach International Airport temporarily shut down.
Despite the chaos, Tiffany and Boulos went ahead with their celebration.
And in 2025, Maples reached another major milestone: she became a grandmother for the first time.
