The Hollowspire Gothic House Sinking Into Winter Field

The Hollowspire House was built in the late nineteenth century as a rural family residence for a small group of winter farmers and livestock keepers who worked the surrounding fields. Designed in the Gothic Revival tradition, the structure emphasized verticality and restrained ornamentation, with pointed arched windows, bone-white stone tracery, and a steep charcoal slate roof intended to shed heavy snowfall. The family consisted of parents and two children, living in relative isolation through long winters when the surrounding land became nearly impassable.

The house functioned as both shelter and seasonal anchor point for agricultural life in a region defined by cold, open terrain.

As the decades passed, agricultural activity in the surrounding region declined, and the harsh winter conditions made continued habitation increasingly impractical. Road access to the property became unreliable during snow seasons, and maintenance of the steep slate roof and delicate stone tracery was gradually neglected. The structure began to settle unevenly into the soft ground beneath it, causing subtle but persistent shifts in alignment across all façades. The porch weakened, and the wicker chair was left behind as the household slowly relocated closer to more accessible settlements. The birdhouse, once maintained, became crooked as its supporting beam warped over time.

By the early 1950s, after prolonged structural settling and the departure of the remaining family members, the Hollowspire Gothic House was permanently abandoned. No restoration was undertaken due to foundational instability and the extreme seasonal conditions of the region. Interior possessions were left behind or gradually buried beneath snow and dust, while the structure continued to slowly sink into the ground. Over time, the asymmetry of the house became more pronounced as winter cycles widened cracks and shifted materials. The house still stands in the snowy field today, its lavender-grey silhouette quietly leaning into the landscape with no resolved future.
